Apicectomy: saving a tooth without resorting to extraction

Targeted surgery to eliminate deep infection and preserve the natural tooth when devitalization is not enough.

What is apicectomy and when is it indicated

Apicectomy is aendodontic surgery procedure that involves theremoval of the apex of a tooth root and the infected surrounding tissue. It is indicated when a devitalization is insufficient to resolve persistent infections, granulomas or cysts. It is a viable alternative to extraction, saving the tooth and maintaining its function.

Endodontics

Dental pulp care.

Symptoms

Pain, tenderness, and swelling.

Root canal treatment

The "cleaning" of dental canals from infected tissue.

Apicectomy

The removal of the root apex of a tooth, which averts total extraction.

Are they painful?

They can cause discomfort in the following days.

How apicoectomy surgery is performed

Apicectomy is performed underlocal anesthesia. The dentist accesses the apex of the root through a small incision in the gum, removes infected tissue and seals the end of the root with a biocompatible material. The procedure is minimally invasive, precise and targeted, and is often completed in less than an hour. After the procedure, the patient can return to normal activities in a short time.

What to expect after surgery and healing time

Following an apicectomy, it is normal to experience slight swelling or discomfort for 1-2 days, easily controlled with medications prescribed by the dentist. Recovery is rapid and, following postoperative instructions, complete healing occurs in a few weeks. Follow-up checks are used to monitor the integrity of the treated tooth and the absence of recurrence.

The stages of the pathway

Dental diagnosis

Specific clinical tests are performed: percussion test to show pain; cold/hot vitality test to have reactions. After radiographic examinations, diagnosis is made and treatment options for root canal treatment are presented.

Endodontics: the clinical diagnosis

1

The use of the rubber dam

The tooth is insulated with a thin sheet of rubber (rubber dam) to protect the throat from liquids and debris, preventing saliva from entering the tooth and subsequent bacterial contamination.

3

The treatment

Once the endodontic treatment is chosen, a local anesthetic is then administered.

2

Endodontic surgery

During endodontic surgery, the damaged or infected pulp is removed (devitalization of the tooth). After thoroughly cleaning and shaping the inside of the tooth, this space is then filled and sealed. On the tooth thus devitalized, a crown or other restoration is placed to protect it and restore it to full function.

Siete meravigliosi... grazie 🙏💖🙏
