Labial frenectomy: a small procedure for a big functional and aesthetic improvement

Short labial frenulum can cause orthodontic, cosmetic or phonetic difficulties: frenulectomy is a simple and effective solution.

What is labial frenectomy and when is it indicated

Labial frenectomy is a small surgical procedure that involves removing or reshaping the frenulum, a thin membrane that connects the lip to the gum. It is indicated when the frenulum is too short, fibrous, or inserted too close to the teeth, causing problems such as diastema (space between the front teeth), difficulty in oral hygiene, gum retraction, or speech impairment. The procedure is simple, quick and often recommended in childhood or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.

How lip frenectomy is performed

Frenulectomy is anoutpatient surgery, performed under local anesthesia and lasting only a few minutes. The frenulum is incised or removed with a traditional scalpel or laser, depending on the clinical case. The procedure is painless, bleeding is minimal and, in most cases, no stitches are needed. Recovery is rapid and the patient can return to normal activities as early as the next day.

After surgery: rapid healing and lasting benefits

The postoperative of frenectomy is generallysimple and free of complications. Mild discomfort or swelling may occur, easily managed with the support of the dentist. Complete healing occurs within a few days. Benefits include improved smile aesthetics, enhanced orthodontic stability, improved oral hygiene, and, in children, support for proper phonation development.

The stages of the pathway

Dental diagnosis

The surgeon performs a complete evaluation of the condition of the mouth: teeth, gums, tongue, mucous membranes, lymph nodes, palate.

Using radiographs and 3D CT scans, a clear view of the roots of the teeth, jaw bones, nerves, and any changes can be obtained. Only after a clear view of the situation is the individualized treatment plan drawn up.

Preoperative checkup

1

The duration of the intervention

The procedure takes different lengths of time depending on the type and operations to be performed. Normally an extraction takes about 30 minutes, while more complex procedures, such as maxillary regenerative surgery, can take between 1 and 2 hours.

Oral surgery

3

Preparation for surgery

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, choosing together the most suitable option for a comfortable and relaxing session, minimizing any trauma, during and after the procedure.

Nitrous oxide sedation

2

Post intervention

After surgery, prophylaxis and guidelines must be followed to reduce the risk of any bleeding, infection, or other. An emergency telephone number is always given, and the day after surgery the person in charge contacts the person to make sure the course is smooth.
