Gnathology: balance between mouth, posture and overall well-being

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, muscle pain, bruxism and posture: gnathology helps restore balance.

What is gnathology and what it deals with

Gnathology is the branch of dentistry that studies the functions of the jaw, particularly temporomandibular joint (TMJ) movements, chewing, and swallowing. It deals with diagnosing and treating dysfunctions that may cause jaw pain, headaches, bruxism, postural disorders, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth.

Who needs

To those suffering from bruxism, headaches, snoring, neck, postural problems, teeth grinding.

Gnathology in Vicenza

Symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction

Gnathological disorders can manifest with symptoms even far from the mouth, such as frequent headaches, neck pain, tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears), dizziness or back pain. Other typical signs include jaw clenching or locking, bruxism (teeth grinding), difficulty chewing, and muscle tension in the face or neck. Recognizing these in time is critical to effective intervention.

Gnathological diagnosis and personalized treatments

Gnathology diagnosis is based on a thorough clinical evaluation and, if necessary, instrumental tests such as jaw kinesiography or postural analysis. At Centro Andriolo, we devise individualized treatment pathways that may include tailored splints, physiotherapy, specific exercises, and collaboration with osteopaths or other specialists. The goal is to reduce symptoms, rebalance jaw function, and improve the patient's overall well-being.

Advanced diagnostic tools in the office

Thanks to leading-edge technologies such as posturometer, podiatoscope, brux-checker, condylograph, and TMJ MRI, our practice accurately assesses the interaction between the mouth, jaw, and posture. These instruments allow us to identify gnathological and postural dysfunctions, ensuring accurate diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan

The stages of the pathway

Visit and data collection

Radiographs are taken in the office, fingerprints are taken, and photographs are taken. Major masticatory muscles, joint, and body and foot posture are examined (posturometer and podoscope). Snoring (polysonography) and grinding (brux checker) are checked. Joint function is examined (condylography) and, if necessary, a joint MRI is performed at a specific diagnostic center.

Gnathological diagnosis through diagnostic tests

1

Treatment plan

Once the critical issues are highlighted, a treatment plan is drawn up, which often involves the use of specific splints, customized dental devices, which can be either remedial or "buffering." In other cases, multidisciplinary treatments are needed, involving different professionals, such as osteopath, dietitian, etc., to implement a treatment plan that involves several coordinated and complementary interventions.

3

Diagnosis

Data collection will reveal whether the masticatory system impacts musculoskeletal function and what treatments are most appropriate to implement to resolve any problems encountered.

2

Follow-up visit

During the follow-up visit, set goals are monitored: checking general well-being, neuromuscular balance, and expected outcomes. Visits should be scheduled for at least 4 to 5 months, time to understand whether the changes/adaptations are continuing properly.

Siete meravigliosi... grazie 🙏💖🙏
