Wisdom tooth: when and why it is best to remove it

A safe and targeted intervention to prevent pain, infection, and space problems in the mouth.

What is wisdom tooth and when it can cause problems

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to appear, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. They often do not find the necessary space to erupt properly and may grow crooked, remain included in the bone, or cause inflammation, decay, cysts, or pain. In these cases, the dentist may recommend their removal to prevent future complications.

Wisdom tooth symptoms to watch out for

Among the most common signs that indicate a possible problem related to wisdom teeth are jaw pain, gum swelling, difficulty opening the mouth, inflammation or recurrent infection(pericoronaritis),headache and displacement of other teeth. In the presence of one or more of these symptoms, it is important to see the dentist promptly for evaluation.

How removal surgery takes place

Wisdom tooth extraction is performed under local anesthesia and is a safe procedure performed under maximum control. Depending on the location of the tooth, a small gingival incision may be necessary. In some cases, the procedure is simple and quick; in others, especially with included teeth, it may require specific surgical techniques. At the CENTRO ANDRIOLO, we use state-of-the-art instruments to ensure effectiveness, precision and minimal postoperative discomfort.

What to expect after surgery and recovery time

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is normal to experience slight swelling or discomfort for 1-2 days. The recovery is generally quick and the dentist will provide precise instructions on nutrition, hygiene, and medications to take. If instructions are followed, healing occurs without complications and a return to normal is usually possible within a few days.

The stages of the pathway

Dental diagnosis

The surgeon performs a complete evaluation of the condition of the mouth: teeth, gums, tongue, mucous membranes, lymph nodes, palate.

Using radiographs and 3D CT scans, a clear view of the roots of the teeth, jaw bones, nerves, and any changes can be obtained. Only after a clear view of the situation is the individualized treatment plan drawn up.

Preoperative checkup

1

The duration of the intervention

The procedure takes different lengths of time depending on the type and operations to be performed. Normally an extraction takes about 30 minutes, while more complex procedures, such as maxillary regenerative surgery, can take between 1 and 2 hours.

Oral surgery

3

Preparation for surgery

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, choosing together the most suitable option for a comfortable and relaxing session, minimizing any trauma, during and after the procedure.

Nitrous oxide sedation

2

Post intervention

After surgery, prophylaxis and guidelines must be followed to reduce the risk of any bleeding, infection, or other. An emergency telephone number is always given, and the day after surgery the person in charge contacts the person to make sure the course is smooth.
